PPL Keeping Current

Having successfully earned your Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) the licence will be issued for a maximum of five years but you’ve got to look after it. We can help by providing proficiency checks and instructor training to ensure you keep your hard-earned licence.

Remember though, you can only exercise the privileges of any license or rating, if you are in possession of a current, appropriate medical certificate.

Your license is issued with a rating; the SEP (Single Engine Piston).  This rating will be valid for twenty-four months and then re-validated for a further twenty-four months subject to the following requirements:

1. Within the three months preceding the expiry date of the rating, pass a proficiency check with an authorised Examiner on a single-engine piston aeroplane.
   OR
   Within twelve months preceding the expiry of the rating complete twelve hours of flight time including six hours of Pilot-In-Command time and twelve take-offs and twelve landings.
   The twelve hours must include a training flight of at least one hour’s duration with a Flight Instructor. This flight may be replaced by any other proficiency check or skill test for a class or type rating.
2. If a single-pilot single-engine class rating has expired, the applicant shall complete a proficiency check.

IMPORTANT: A Certificate of Test or Certificate of Experience in your pilot’s licence must be signed on completion of the above by an Examiner.

At the end of five years you will need to apply for re-issue of the licence.
